Skiing has been popular in the UK for many years, and this year’s London Snow Show, the annual gathering of ski and snowboard fans, brands, resorts and innovators, once again showed just how strong and passionate the UK snow sports community is. One of our SkiMachine team members went along to meet and connect with entrepreneurs and professionals from across the skiing world, and it only reinforced our belief in the huge potential for indoor treadmill skiing in the UK.
CONNECTING WITH ENTREPRENEURS AND INNOVATORS
During the event at Olympia London, we had the chance to connect with a wide range of people shaping the future of snowsports. This year marked the 49th edition of the UK’s biggest Snow Show and, after 15 years, its return to its former home in London. The event brought together inspirational speakers, resorts from across the globe and the best in gear, all under one roof. The show attracts everyone from leading ski and snowboard brands, resort representatives and equipment manufacturers to innovators, tech developers, instructors and passionate enthusiasts.
Among the standout exhibitors were Snowsport England with their Dry Slope Ambassadors; BASI, the British Association of Snowsport Instructors, offering world-class training and accreditation; the Ski Club of Great Britain, a key organization promoting skiing and snowboarding across the UK; and LAAX, a leading international ski resort known for its cutting-edge terrain parks. Many of the people we spoke to were already familiar with the concept of indoor skiing, both snow-based and treadmill, and were genuinely curious to learn more. The conversations we had, driven by a shared passion for skiing and snowboarding, reinforced what we’ve been sensing for some time: the UK is increasingly ready for new indoor treadmill skiing solutions, and the momentum behind the concept is growing fast!
HOW THE BRITISH APPROACH SKIING TODAY
With a participation rate of around 10% and approximately 6.34 million skiers nationwide, skiing has clearly earned its place as one of the UK’s most popular winter sports. While the United Kingdom may not be the first country that comes to mind when you think of skiing, it often surprises visitors with its natural slopes nestled in the Scottish Highlands. While Glenshee Ski Resort offers the country’s largest skiing and snowboarding area, Glencoe Mountain Resort boasts Scotland’s highest vertical drop and its longest, steepest runs. Together, Scotland’s ski resorts welcome around 200.000 skiers every year.
Still, skiing in the UK has always relied on unpredictable weather and snow conditions. For many skiers living in southern England, it is actually faster to reach France’s Courchevel than Scotland’s Cairngorm. As road and air connections to Europe improved and low-cost airlines made travel easier, the UK ski market gradually shifted abroad. Today, over one million British skiers head to the Alps or other European destinations each year, with France remaining their favorite, including ski resorts such as Méribel, Val d’Isère, and Courchevel.
DRY SLOPES VS INDOOR SKI SLOPES
Dry slopes have long been part of the UK skiing landscape and the country has more than 50 of them, which is more than any other country in the world. They provide an accessible and affordable way to try snow sports and are often easy to reach, making them ideal for building basic confidence on skis or a snowboard, although the synthetic surface can feel hard and unpredictable. Outdoor dry slopes are also exposed to the elements, and in the UK that often means skiing in wind and rain, which can make learning less comfortable.
Indoor ski centers offer a very different learning experience. Skiing on an indoor ski simulator feels smoother, safer, and more controlled than skiing on a dry slope. Instead of short runs and waiting for lifts, you can ski or snowboard continuously for an hour and focus entirely on your technique. You are indoors, protected from the weather, skiing in a t-shirt while an instructor stands close by to give real-time guidance. In one focused session you can achieve more high-quality practice than during an entire afternoon outside, and afterward you can relax with a well--deserved drink in the sports bar! Altogether, when you compare dry slopes to indoor ski slopes, the difference in comfort, coaching quality, and practice efficiency becomes clear.
BUSINESS MODEL FOR DRY SLOPE CENTERS
Adding one or more SkiMachines to a Dry Slope Center can also be an attractive business model. With over 55 commercially operated centers in the Netherlands, we see clear potential to generate additional revenue for existing Dry Slope Centers in the United Kingdom as well. The combination of an outdoor dry slope and an indoor ski treadmill creates a truly unique offering. The dry slope provides an outdoor skiing experience with natural speed and real weather conditions, while the indoor SkiMachine enables year-round operation and personalized instruction in a more controlled environment. THE POTENTIAL OF THE UK SKI INDUSTRY
Many Brits head straight to France for their ski holidays, spending a small fortune on travel, accommodation, and lessons once they arrive. Yet much of that valuable time is spent learning basic skills on beginner slopes instead of enjoying the stunning alpine landscapes. Why go about it this way when indoor skiing offers a smarter and more cost-effective alternative? By mastering the fundamentals at home, skiers can build confidence and technique before their winter sports trip, making every moment on the mountain with friends and family truly count.
